This month, f.rock sends hearts a flutter with an issue dedicated to Love. With Valentine’s Day looming in the distance, one cannot help but color our wardrobes in shades of pretty pinks and passionate reds. A celebration of sugar and spice, and all things nice, we feature talented Sydney designer Magdalena Duma and preview her latest S/S 2011 collection, introduce you to Fjorde magazine, as well as mention a few old favourites: Cilla & Pepe, Antonia Paris, Double Dutch Design and Storm in a Teacup.

The team at f.rock fashion would like to thank you for all the support in anticipation of our upcoming event, Launch My Label. It surely is an exciting time for emerging designers and fashionistas alike, with great opportunities to listen to some amazing Fashion industry experts about the business side of fashion; how they launched their labels, fashion week, retail, wholesale, PR, branding and much, much more!

In the dark of war, the pin-up girls were the pictures of hope of a better time of people’s longing for fun.

Magdalena Duma’s current S/S collection is an ode to these pin-ups with glamorous designs in a palette of black, white, beige and yellow, in modern silhouettes focused on structure and draping. Edgy yet feminine, Duma’s pieces comprise of an eclectic mix of flattering bustier styles, sexy sheer cut-outs and bewitching drapery.

We speak to the lady behind the label:

Q: Hey Magdalena! What things do you LOVE?

A: I love vintage bric-a- brak! From glass puddle shaped bottles to face sculptures of famous composers. Being a designer I love and need accessories, new and old. I believe they make or break an outfit.

Q: What inspires you?

A: So much inspires me; European history, culture, books, paintings and people. My favourite thing to do is go to a café and people watch. There are some incredible dressers out there. From an old lady who is immaculately dressed for a day out on town, to teenagers who are still trying to find out what their style is.

Q: What will you be wearing from the Magdalena Duma range for Valentine’s day?

A: That would depend on where I would be going! If I were going to a nice dinner and cocktails I would wear the ¾ length cowl neck dress in lemon with my white Balenciaga platform shoes.

If I were going somewhere more casual I would wear my A-line leopard print skirt with a corset lace up waistband and a white T-bar singlet, paired with some wedges.

It’s that time of the year again for Melbourne fashionistas, with the 2011 L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF) commencing on the 14th of March until the 20th. Fronted by the gorgeous Melissa George, this year will undoubtedly exceed expectations with an inspiring line up of guests and innovative platforms to support the Australian fashion industry.

I must admit, summer is not my favourite season, I much prefer the floral prettiness and soft pastels of spring or the skilled layering and compulsory blacks of winter. Summer usually calls for tank tops and ripped denim shorts but this time, I’m certain there’s hope. From stylish, fun swimwear from Amore & Sorvete for my lazy days at the beach to the cute designs of Margery Daw for my summer dresses, I feel there might be a glimmer of hope for this unenthusiastic beach baby.

This month we speak to Kesta from acclaimed swimwear label Amore & Sorvete about her favourite things about summer, we show case Melbourne’s newest gem the Clothesline Collective and fall in love with the luxe denim of Eleventh Commandment. Swimwear label Amore & Sorvete’s highly anticipated summer 2010/11 collection has been launched to great popular acclaim. Entitled “Love & Ice-cream”, the second collection from WA designers Bridgette Gale and Kesta Anderson includes bikinis and one-piece bathers, as well as kaftans, maxi dresses and a range of stylish beachwear.

Bridgette and Kesta have so far been delighted by the collection’s reception, both Australia-wide and internationally, with fans of the label responding to the designers’ new ideas and influences.

“Our second collection draws on a variety of influences and caters to a wide range of tastes with everything from fresh colours and girly prints to some more racy designs,”

said Bridgette. So far, the girls have really loved the cute, feminine additions, like the bows and frills.

We feel our new collection plays on the traditional idea of the bikini and one-piece and offers women something a bit special, one-of-a-kind.”

The swimwear duo have been designing since 2009, with their first collection attracting the attention of Fashion TV who broadcasted their runway show to a national audience.

We speak to Kesta, one half of Amore & Sorvete:

What’s your favorite thing about summer?

So many things! Being able to live in a bikini all day long and still be in a cossie in the warm balmy nights, the smell of BBQ in the air and the rejuvenating feeling after a day in the sun, salt and sand!

What or who are your inspirations when designing?

Definitely colour and shape takes precedence when designing, our main influence is Brazilian style hence our name ‘Amore & Sorvete’, Love and Ice-cream. We love to play with bright prints and bold colour but the key aspect when designing is to add details such as frills, trimmings and accessories to make you feel like you’re wearing a whole outfit, not just a swimsuit!

What’s your favourite piece from the collection?

Our signature piece: Primrose! It was produced in our first collection but it continues to be loved by everyone. The fit is comfy and appealing to all body shapes and the design really stands out.

Who is the Amore & Sorvete girl?

Someone who isn’t afraid to flaunt what they’ve got! The A&S wearer is a confident and feminine girl, who is not only cute and sexy but one who wants to stand out and turn heads.

This is all so exciting, so what’s next for Amore & Sorvete?

Definitely expansion! Hopefully A&S will be introduced to the USA by next year. We want to see A&S on the streets and beaches of sunny California!
